Statement in response to the TRC’s Calls to Action

The Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics recognizes its responsibility as an association to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

We do so by acknowledging the words of the Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, the Truth and Reconciliation Commissioner, who stated:

"Whatever you do, make sure you do not stop doing it. This is long-term work."

Therefore, we are committed to reconciliation by supporting:

Training for Indigenous language teachers
A bachelor’s degree in Indigenous languages and diploma programs at the college and university levels.
The work of researchers, educators, and students in maintaining, revitalizing, and strengthening Indigenous languages.
The development of language curricula featuring Indigenous content and perspectives.
Integrating education for reconciliation into teacher training programs (fostering intercultural understanding, empathy, and respect; supporting language instruction that takes into account the history of residential schools and Indigenous history).

Our actions

To date, we have carried out or are planning the following actions:

Including speakers from Indigenous communities in the CLA annual conference
Organizing a joint 2016 roundtable with the Canadian Linguistic Association and SSHRC regarding the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action related to language
Organizing the 2023 CLA conference invited symposium: IONKWAKWENIONHÁTIE – HAUDENOSAUNEE WOMEN, KINSHIP AND LANGUAGE RESURGENCE IN KAHNAWÀ:KE
Planning presentations and roundtables on Indigenous languages at the CLA annual conference
Supporting funding initiatives that specifically target professional activities promoting member awareness and providing financial support for the participation of an Indigenous graduate student CLA member in the annual conference—for example, the Indigenous Graduate Student Award
Adding the role of Indigenous Language Advocate to the CLA Executive Committee
